Born: September 17, 1934, San Diego, California
Died June 21, 1969. Dallas, Texas. American tennis player. Nicknamed Little Mo. Started tennis at age 10, and in 1949 became the youngest player ever to win the U.S. Junior Championships. In 1951, she won the U.S. Open Tennis Championships for the first time in the women's singles, and in 1952, she won the championships twice in a row. She also won the Wimbledon Championships for the first time, and in 1953, she won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Championships, becoming the first woman in tennis history to achieve the Grand Slam (winning all four Grand Slams in a single year). In 1954, she won the French Open for the second time in a row and the Wimbledon Championship for the third time in a row, but was forced to retire due to injuries sustained after a fall from a horse. She intimidated her opponents with her powerful drives and poker face. In 1968, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

[Died] November 26, 1974, London. British critic. Studied at Oxford University. Regularly contributed book reviews to major newspapers and magazines such as the New Statesman, the Observer, and the Sunday Times. In 1939, together with the poet Spender, he founded the literary magazine Horizon, which he edited until it ceased publication in 1950. His collections of essays include Enemies of Promise (1938), The Unquiet Grave (44), and Ideas and Places (53), and his novel The Rock Pool (36).

Died May 12, 1916, Dublin, Ireland. Leader of the Irish independence movement. Worked with James Larkin and others in the labor movement and brought socialist ideas to Ireland. After the outbreak of World War I, advocated armed uprising. After the Easter Rising (1916), he was executed in Dublin.
