A French archipelago located in the southern Indian Ocean, approximately 70° east longitude and 50° south latitude. It consists of about 300 small islands. The main island is volcanic, with the highest point being 1,865m. There are glaciers and fjords along the coast. There is an observatory in Port-aux-Français.
