Also known as Jailolo Island. The largest island in the Maluku Islands, eastern Indonesia. It has a complex K-shaped topography and many volcanoes. The inhabitants are mainly Alfur people, who traditionally lived on wild sago palm starch as their staple food and in dwellings on stilts on the coast. They also depend on fishing. It has long been under the control of Ternate Island to the west, which prospered from the spice trade, but in 1683 it became a Dutch territory. Area: 18,000 km2 . Population: about 120,000 people.
