A plucked string instrument used in American folk music. A type of zither. It has a mechanism that allows chords to be played easily. There are about 40 strings and a number of square bars at right angles to each other, one for each type of chord that can be played. When any square bar is pressed, the felt on the back of the bar hits the string, muting the sound, and only the string at the break in the felt sounds. The instrument is usually held by holding the horizontal bar with the left hand and strumming the strings with the right hand. It was invented in the 1880s by German instrument maker CA Güter.
