Also known as Gaelic. A general term for the languages of Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man that belong to the Celtic branch of the Indo-European language family. Gaelic. Irish is a representative language. It was imported to Scotland around the 5th century and became Scotch Gaelic. Manx, a branch of Gaelic, has documents from the 17th century, but it has been pushed out by English and its native speakers have disappeared. However, there have been recent attempts to revive it.

ゲール語とも。インド・ヨーロッパ語族のケルト語派に属するアイルランド，スコットランド，マン島の諸語の総称。Gaelic。アイルランド語がその代表。これは５世紀ごろスコットランドへ輸入されスコッチ・ゲーリック語となった。ゲーリック語の一派であるマン島のマンクス語Manxは17世紀の文献をもつが英語に押されて母語としての話し手は消滅した。しかし最近復活の試みがある。
