Abbreviation Sgr. A zodiacal constellation. The current winter solstice is in this constellation. In Greek mythology, Chiron is a wise centaur, half-man, half-horse race, and is depicted as aiming an arrow at Antares in the constellation Scorpio. The six stars that make up the main part of the constellation are arranged in a ladle shape: ζ, τ, σ, φ, λ, and μ. In China, they were called the Nanto Rokusei. The alpha star, Rukhbat (from the Arabic word for archer's knee), is located far south of the constellation and has a brightness of only 4.1 magnitude. The brightest star in the constellation is ε, with a magnitude of 1.8 and a spectral type of B9.

略号Sgr。黄道星座の一つ。現在の冬至点はこの星座にある。ギリシア神話で半人半馬族ケンタウロス族に属する賢者ケイロンの姿をかたどり，弓に矢をつがえ，さそり座のアンタレスをねらう姿になる。星座の主体をなすのはひしゃく形に並ぶζ,τ,σ,φ,λ,μの6個の星で，中国では南斗六星と呼んでいた。α星ルクバト(アラビア語の射手のひざに由来)は，この星座のずっと南のほうにあり，明るさはわずか4.1等しかない。星座全体でいちばん明るい星はε星で1.8等，スペクトル型はB9である。
