A port city on the south shore of Manila Bay in the central-western part of Luzon in the northern Philippines. The capital of Cavite Province. During the colonial period, it was known as a military port for Spain and the United States. The population is Tagalog, with a population of 99,367 (2000). It is surrounded by rice fields, coconut groves, and fishponds, but in recent years the number of factories has increased and it is becoming a residential area near Manila. During the Spanish colonial period, the province was the center of the independence movement in the 19th century, partly because of the large amount of land owned by Catholic churches in the province.
