Ie Island

Japanese: 伊江島 - いえじま

An island located about 5km west of the Motobu Peninsula in the northwest of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture. Ie Village consists of one island. It is an oval-shaped raised coral reef island, and the entire island is a flat limestone plateau. To the east of the center stands Ie Tacchu (also known as Gusukuyama), a 172m-high mountain made of Paleozoic chert, which looks like a huge floating ship from afar. There is a cliff of about 60m on the north coast, and the southern side is gently sloping. The southern slope is the center of the village. During World War II, there was an airfield here, and it was a fierce battlefield. Tobacco and chrysanthemums are cultivated, as well as beef cattle. Area: ^22.77km2 . Population: 5,110 (2005).

沖縄県，沖縄島北西部の本部半島の西約 5kmにある島。1島で伊江村を構成する。隆起サンゴ礁島で楕円形をなし，全島平坦な石灰岩台地。中央東寄りに古生層チャートからなる標高 172mの伊江タッチュー（別称城山〈ぐすくやま〉）がそびえ，遠望では巨大な艦船が浮かぶ姿のように見える。北海岸には 60mあまりの絶壁があり，南側は緩傾斜。南面傾斜地が村の中心地。第2次世界大戦の際は飛行場があり，激戦地であった。タバコ，キク栽培のほか，肉牛飼育などが行なわれる。面積 22.77km²。人口 5110（2005）。
