Bevan - Beban (English spelling) Anearin Bevan

British labour activist and politician. Born into a family of miners in South Wales, he worked as a miner after graduating from primary school. He emerged as an activist in the miners' union and became a Labour MP in 1929. He was a member of the left wing of the party from the beginning, and in the 1930s he published the left wing newspaper Tribune with Cripps and others, and also participated in the Popular Front movement. During World War II, he continued to criticize the coalition government, which included the Labour Party, but when the Labour Party was formed in 1945, he became Minister of Health and demonstrated leadership in realizing a national health care system. He became Minister of Labour in 1951, but resigned three months later in opposition to the cuts to social security spending for rearmament. He continued to be a central figure in the left wing, but around 1956 he began to part ways with the left wing.
