Branch tree

Japanese: 分木 - ぶんぎ

A branch tree is a technical measure used to divide water from a single waterway into two districts or villages. A scale is set up at the water division point, and water is divided according to the height of the scale. An example is a branch tree installed at the mouth of the Oi well, which has an intake on the north bank of the Anegawa River in Sumainiwa, Asai Town, Higashiasai County, Shiga Prefecture. On the opposite bank of the Oi intake is the Yokoi well, which irrigates the Gori Sho, a large village larger than the three villages of Sumainiwa, Nomura, and Mitamura that were members of the Oi group, and this often led to water disputes throughout the Middle Ages.

1本の水路から，用水を二つの区域や村に分ける際にとられる技術的手段の一種で，分水点に目盛木を立て，その高さによって分水を行うのが分木である。例として滋賀県東浅井郡浅井町相撲庭（すまいにわ）の姉川北岸に取入口をもつ〈大井〉の井口に打つ分木がある。〈大井〉取入口の対岸には，大井組の加入村の相撲庭，野村，三田村の3ヵ村よりも強大な郷里（ごうり）荘を灌漑する〈横井〉があって相対立し，中世を通じてしばしば水論を惹起していた。
