Don Camillo

Japanese: ドン･カミロ（英語表記）Don Camillo

He is the protagonist of the Don Camillo series written by Italian popular writer Giovanni Guareschi (1908-68). Set in a rural village along the Po River during the chaotic period immediately after the Resistance during World War II, the series tells the story of Don Camillo, a priest, and Peppone, a Communist village chief, who are both kind, cruel, and violent, but who protect each other with friendship and respect despite their constant disagreements. The film adaptation by director Duvivier (Don Camillo: The Merry Man, 1951), in which Fernandel played Don Camillo, made the series famous worldwide.

イタリアの大衆作家グアレスキGiovanni Guareschi(1908‐68)作〈ドン･カミロ〉シリーズの主人公。第2次大戦時，レジスタンス直後の混沌とした情勢を背景に，ポー川流域の農村を舞台に，ともに善良でそこつ者で暴力的な，司祭のドン･カミロと共産党村長のペッポーネとが，ことごとにいがみあいながらも友情と敬意をもってかばいあうという，涙と笑いの人情物語であった。フェルナンデルがドン･カミロに扮した，デュビビエ監督による映画化(《陽気なドン･カミロ》1951)で，全世界にその名を知られた。
