In Hesiod’s Theogony, they are said to be the daughters of Nyx (Night) or Zeus and Themis (Law), and in Plato’s Republic, they are said to be the daughters of Ananke (Necessity). Both agree on the names Klōthō (Spinner), Lachesis (Distributor), and Atropos (The Unchangeable). They were thought to determine the fate of each individual at the time of his birth, from the various events in his life to his lifespan.
