1766‐1842 French author. Born to a minor noble family in the city of Le Belle in the south of France, he became a naval officer, but fled to exile in 1791 to avoid the French Revolution. In 1792, he participated in the Quiberon landing under Prince de Condé, and then fled to England. Returning to France in 1802, he served as a member of the Council of Petitions, became a chamberlain to Emperor Napoleon, and was made a baron. After Napoleon's downfall in 1815, he accompanied Napoleon's son to St. Helena, where he took notes of Napoleon's dictations as his secretary. In December 1816, he was exiled by Hudson Lowe, governor of St. Helena, on suspicion of conspiracy, and lived in Brussels. He returned to France when Napoleon died in 1821.
