Dutch landscape painter. Born and died in Amsterdam. He was probably a pupil of Ruisdael from around 1657, and his works up to around 1662 were strongly influenced by him. He developed his own style, and until 1668 he mainly painted landscapes with watermills and forests, obscured by ponds and wide roads, using light greens, browns and delicate greys. His works are characterized by bright natural scenes, in contrast to Ruisdael's romantic fantasy landscapes. He married in 1668 and worked as an inspector of wine and oil measures for the city of Amsterdam. This led to him seeming to give up painting, but in 1689 he boldly used perspective in his masterpiece, "Avenue at Middelharnis" (National Gallery, London), demonstrating a skill comparable to that of Ruisdael. "Landscape with a Watermill" (ibid.) is also known as a masterpiece. [Taro Nomura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
