Hobbema - Mindert Hobbema

Dutch landscape painter. Born and died in Amsterdam. He was probably a pupil of Ruisdael from around 1657, and his works up to around 1662 were strongly influenced by him. He developed his own style, and until 1668 he mainly painted landscapes with watermills and forests, obscured by ponds and wide roads, using light greens, browns and delicate greys. His works are characterized by bright natural scenes, in contrast to Ruisdael's romantic fantasy landscapes. He married in 1668 and worked as an inspector of wine and oil measures for the city of Amsterdam. This led to him seeming to give up painting, but in 1689 he boldly used perspective in his masterpiece, "Avenue at Middelharnis" (National Gallery, London), demonstrating a skill comparable to that of Ruisdael. "Landscape with a Watermill" (ibid.) is also known as a masterpiece.

オランダの風景画家。アムステルダムに生まれ、同地で没。彼はおそらく1657年ごろからロイスダールの弟子であったと推定され、62年ごろまでの作品にはその影響が強い。以後独自の画風を開き、68年まで主として池や広い道によって視野を遮られる水車小屋や森のある風景を、明るい緑や褐色、繊細なグレーの色調を用いて描いた。ロイスダールのロマン派的な幻想風景とは対照的な、明るい自然の姿が彼の作品の特色である。68年に結婚し、アムステルダム市のワインおよび油の計量器検定官として働く。このため描画を放棄したかにみえたが、89年に代表作と目される『ミッデルハルニスの並木道』（ロンドン、ナショナル・ギャラリー）では遠近法を大胆に取り入れ、ロイスダールに比肩する手腕を示した。また『水車のある風景』（同上）も秀作として知られる。
