A port city in northeastern Minnesota, USA. Located on the west shore of Lake Superior. It became a fur trading post in the late 17th century, settlement began in the 1850s, and the city was incorporated in 1870. Lake transport increased with the expansion of railroads to the western states and the wheat-growing region of Manitoba, Canada. The city also exports iron ore, coal, and crude oil from mines in the Mesabi-Vermilion Mountains. The port has a coal dock, wheat elevator, and iron ore dock, as well as steel, cement, electrical equipment, and paint factories. There is an air force base, a branch campus of the University of Minnesota, the Chisholm Museum, and the Tweed Museum of Art. It is a key point for land, sea, and air transport, with an airport. Population 85,493 (1990).

アメリカ合衆国，ミネソタ州北東部の港市。スペリオル湖西岸に位置する。 17世紀後半毛皮交易地となり，1850年代に入植開始，70年市制施行。西方の諸州やカナダのマニトバ州のコムギ地帯への鉄道拡張により湖上輸送が増大。またメサビ＝バーミリオン山地などの鉱山を控え，鉄鉱石，石炭，原油などを移出する。港には石炭ドック，小麦エレベータ，鉄鉱石ドックなどがあり，製鋼，セメント，電機器具，ペイント工場なども立地。空軍基地をはじめ，ミネソタ大学の分校，チゾム博物館，ツィード美術館などがある。飛行場もあり，水陸空交通の要衝。人口8万 5493 (1990) 。
