A port city on the Gulf of Guinea in southern Ghana, West Africa. Population 72,000 (1982). Local name Gua or Oegua. Capital of Central Region. A trading port and fishing center. Located between the capital Accra and the western port city of Sekondi-Takoradi, it exports cocoa and citrus fruits and imports food and building materials. The town was established on the basis of a fort built by the Swedes in 1652, and came under British control in 1664, becoming the base of British colonial administration in the region. 西アフリカのガーナ南部,ギニア湾に面した港町。人口7万2000(1982)。現地語の地名はグアGuaもしくはオエグアOegua。セントラル州の州都である。貿易港であると共に漁業の中心にもなっている。首都アクラと西部の港湾都市セコンディ・タコラディとの中間にあって,ココアや柑橘類を輸出し,食料や建築材料を輸入する。1652年にスウェーデンが建設した城塞を母体として町が出現し,64年イギリスの支配下に入ってこの地方のイギリス植民地行政の基地となった。
