Tyrophagus nigricans - Tyrophagus nigricans

This mite belongs to the Arthropoda phylum, Arachnida class, Acaridae family. It is rather small, with a body length of 0.28 to 0.42 millimeters, milky white body color, long body hair with side branches around it, and is characterized by one pair of slightly short hairs and six pairs of long hairs at the back. It is distributed worldwide, but is a particularly representative species in Japan. It infests a wide range of foods, including grains, flour, sweets, dried fish, miso, sugar, shichimi pepper, cheese and other dairy products. It can sometimes infest tatami mats or even straw itself, causing damage to greenhouse-grown cucumbers.

節足動物門クモ形綱ダニ目コナダニ科に属するダニ。体長は0.28～0.42ミリメートルとやや小形で、体色は乳白色で体毛は長く、周囲に側枝が生え、とくに後方に1対のやや短い毛と6対の長い毛があることが特徴である。世界的に分布するが、日本ではとくに代表的な種類である。穀物、穀粉、菓子類、干し魚、みそ、砂糖、七味唐辛子、チーズなどの乳製品など広範囲の食品に発生する。ときには畳に大発生したり、藁(わら)自体にも発生し、温室栽培のキュウリなどが被害を受けることもある。
