Horizon

Japanese: 地平線 - ちへいせん
Horizon
〘noun〙 The boundary between the sky and the earth as seen from an open vantage point. A great circle formed when a plane perpendicular to a vertical line at a certain point on the Earth's surface intersects with the celestial sphere. *Shogaku Yomiuri (1873) <Tanaka Yoshikazu> 4 "If a straight stick is floated on the surface of the water, the position of this stick is the direction of the horizon." [Additional note] This is shown in the diagram at the bottom left of Matteo Ricci's "Kunyu Bankoku Zenzu" ( 1602 ). In the explanation, the horizontal line drawn down the middle of the circle is called the "horizon" and the vertical line the "zenith," but the diagram says "horizon."
