Intercropping - Kansaku

A type of mixed cropping in which one crop is cultivated between other crops. In this case, the crop planted earlier is called the previous crop or previous crop, and the crop planted later is called the subsequent crop or subsequent crop. It can be effective in maintaining soil fertility by consolidating land use and protecting the crop whose seedlings have grown. However, it can be inconvenient to work with, and the subsequent crop can grow and block sunlight and ventilation, lowering the soil temperature and causing a deficiency of special fertilizers, which can harm the previous crop. The terms previous crop and subsequent crop are also used in the case of crop rotation.

混作の一種で，1作物の間に他の作物を栽培すること。その際，前から作付けされていたものを前作あるいは前作物といい，あとから作付けされるものを後作あるいは後作物という。土地の利用を集約し，また幼苗が生長した作物の保護を受けることにもなり，地力の維持に有効な場合もある。しかし，作業上の不便が多いほか，後作物が生長して日光や通風をさえぎり，地温を低め特殊肥料分の欠乏を招いて，前作に害を与えることもある。輪作の場合にも前作，後作という呼称が用いられる。
