Kronshtadt Rebellion - Kronshtadt Rebellion
A rebellion against the Soviet government broke out in March 1921. The sailors and workers of Kronshtadt, a fortress island off the coast of Petrograd, played a prominent role in the Russian Revolution, but even after the revolution, the island's Soviet, which was under the influence of Left Socialist Revolutionaries and anarchists, rebelled against the Bolshevik government's use of dictatorial power. Meanwhile, the country was exhausted by the civil war, the lives of workers were ruined, and strikes spread in Petrograd. On March 1, the Kronshtadt Soviet supported the strike in Petrograd, passing a resolution calling for secret elections, freedom of speech and the press, the abolition of the Party's Politburo, and uniform wages for workers. The Bolshevik government considered it a white counter-revolution, and sent in the Red Army under the command of M. Tukhachevsky, who, after fierce fighting with the sailors, put down the rebellion on the 18th.
