Shizutani School

Japanese: 閑谷学校 - しずたにがっこう

A local school in the Okayama Domain. In 1668, the feudal lord Ikeda Mitsumasa established over 100 schools within his domain. In 1675, they were merged with one in Shizutani, Wake County (present-day Bizen City) to become Shizutani Academy. It developed alongside the Okayama Domain school, and accommodated not only samurai but also the children of ordinary people, mainly teaching Neo-Confucianism. It was merged with the Okayama Domain school in 1870, and closed in 1877. The remains (special historic site) are valuable in the history of school architecture.

岡山藩の郷学。1668年，藩主池田光政が領内に設立した百数十ヵ所の手習所が，和気(わけ)郡閑谷（現，備前市）に置かれたものに1675年統合され，閑谷黌(こう)となった。岡山藩校と並んで発展し，武士だけでなく，一般庶民の子弟も収容しておもに朱子学を授けた。1870年岡山藩校に合併，1877年廃校。遺構（特別史跡）は学校建築史上貴重。
