Amagasaki Mataemon

Japanese: 尼崎又右衛門 - あまがさきまたえもん
Amagasaki Mataemon
A townsman who was in charge of entering and leaving Osaka Castle during the Edo period. The first Yoshiji was the son of Shinohara Ukyo-no-suke, the lord of Koshimizu Castle in Settsu, and was born in Amagasaki, so he moved to Osaka and called himself Amagasakiya Matajiro. In 1634 (Kan'ei 11), under the second Kiyotaka, the family was allowed to use the surname Amagasaki Mataemon, and every generation thereafter inherited the name Amagasaki Mataemon. Under the fourth Shigetaka, the family was allowed to carry swords, and during the Enpo era (1673-81), they built 100 new sword-shaped ships and began shipping on the Yamato River. They then developed the new fields in Amagasaki during the Genroku era (1688-1704), and were granted the privilege of controlling agar in the Bunka era (1804-1818).
