The city is located in the southeastern corner of Hyogo Prefecture, occupying the lowlands of the Muko River and Kanzaki River basins, facing Osaka Bay. It was incorporated as a city in 1916. The central city area, which developed on a delta, was once a castle town with a river port and was a major producer of cotton. However, from the mid-Meiji period, factories for paper, spinning, metals, etc. were established, and since the Showa period, it has become one of the centers of the Hanshin industrial area. After World War II, the city recovered quickly, and the metal industry in particular has been thriving, producing a large amount of steel and copper-drawn products, as well as many large factories for machinery, chemicals, and confectionery. There is significant land subsidence and air pollution due to the pumping of industrial water. The Tokaido Main Line, Sanyo Main Line, Fukuchiyama Line, Hankyu Electric Railway Line, Hanshin Electric Railway Line, and Meishin Expressway run through the city, and the area along the Hankyu Kobe Line is a residential area. The city center is formerly known as Daimotsuura, and the grave of Chikamatsu Monzaemon is located at Kosaiji Temple in the center of the city. The January 1995 Southern Hyogo Prefecture earthquake killed 48 people and caused damage to 30,408 houses, including those that collapsed or burned down. The area was 50.72 km2 . The population was 453,748 (2010). → Related items Kanzaki | Fukuchiyama Line | Takakuni Hosokawa Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
