Pronounced "daisen," it is a small piece of paper pasted on the cover of a Japanese or Chinese book that indicates the title and volume number. There are two types of title labels for Japanese publications: rectangular and square; the former are generally pasted on the upper left side of the cover, while square title labels are pasted on the upper center of the cover. Sometimes both are pasted on the cover at the same time. If the characters on the title label are handwritten, it is called a written title label, while if the characters are printed, it is called a printed title label. In the case of printed title labels, there are those with only the characters printed and those with a frame around the characters, and in the yomihon and kusazoshi books from the late Edo period, pictures are sometimes added to the title label. These are called illustrated title labels. Source: Dictionary of Library and Information Science, 4th Edition Dictionary of Library and Information Science, 5th Edition About Information |
