A village in Aki District, eastern Kochi Prefecture. Population 4,383 (1995). It borders Aki City to the west and faces Tosa Bay. Most of the village area is mountainous with little flat land, but there is arable land along the banks of the Wajiki River, which flows south through the center of the village. Taking advantage of the warm climate, the forced cultivation of vegetables has been popular since ancient times, and eggplants and bell peppers are the main products shipped. A cotton textile industry known as "Wajikishima" is a local industry, and coastal fishing using beach seine nets and other methods continues. Small sand dunes stretch from east to west along the coast, and a magnificent pine grove can be seen at Kotogahama Beach. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
