This event was introduced to Japan, and the first banquet can be seen in the "Nihon Shoki - Tenmu 14th year ( 685 ), September." During the reign of Emperor Saga, it became established as an annual imperial court event.
(2) Originally, poetry banquets were for the composer of Chinese poetry, but examples of waka poetry can be found in the Kokinshu. As time went on, chrysanthemum-themed clothing and chrysanthemum-matching outfits came to be added, and the chrysanthemum festival became more prominent.

〘名〙 (陽数の極である九が重なる意) 五節供の一つ。陰暦九月九日のこと。また、その節会(せちえ)。重陽の節。菊の節供。《季・秋》※続日本紀‐天平宝字二年（758）三月辛巳「卒土公私、一准_二重陽_一、永停_二此節_一」〔杜甫‐九日詩〕[語誌](1)九月九日を吉日として、茱萸を身に着け、菊酒を飲む習俗が漢代には定着し、五代以後は朝廷での飲宴の席で賦詩が行なわれた。この行事が日本にも伝わり、「書紀‐天武一四年（六八五）九月」に見えるのが最初の宴である。嵯峨天皇の時代に毎年の宮廷行事として定着した。
(2)詩宴は漢詩文を賦するのが本来であるが、和歌の例も「古今集」に見られる。また、時代が下るにつれ、菊の着せ綿や菊合わせなどが加わり、菊の節供としての色合いが強調されるようになる。
