The capital of Umbria, central Italy. Population: 148,575 (2001 census preliminary figure). Located on a hill 493 meters above sea level overlooking the Tiber River. It has a long history, having already flourished as the base of Etruscan civilization in the 4th century BC. In the 12th century AD, it consolidated its status as an autonomous city, and in the 15th century, it became the center of Umbrian painting, producing painters such as Perugino. The National Gallery of Umbria, housed in the Palazzo dei Priori (13th-14th century), houses valuable works from that school. It is also a cultural city, with the University of Perugia, founded in the 13th century, and the University for Foreigners of Perugia (established in 1926), which teaches Italian to foreigners. In addition to the manufacture of confectionery, tobacco, and leather bags, the city also produces machinery, textiles, and other industries.
