…The national art museum in Florence, Italy. Also called the Galleria Palatina (Royal Museum), it is located in Palazzo Pitti along with the Silver Museum and the Modern Art Museum, and occupies the left half (northern) of the second floor. Construction of the palazzo began in the late 15th century as the residence of Luca Pitti, a wealthy Florentine merchant. In 1549 it was acquired by the Medici family, who subsequently expanded it into a succession of Medici residences. Behind it was the extensive Boboli Gardens. …
