In the early 8th century, under the Umayyad dynasty, he was the Imam of the Kaysanite sect, a branch of Shiite Islam. His father was Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, the founder of the Kaysan sect. According to legend, he was poisoned to death by an Umayyad member, but upon his death he handed over the position of Imam to Muhammad ibn Ali of the Abbasid dynasty (→Abbasid dynasty). In later years, the Abbasids used this fact as an important pillar in their promotion and development of the revolutionary movement, claiming legitimacy as the head of an Islamic state.
