A general term for gastropods in the Terebridae family, or one of these species. There are about 120 species in Japan that belong to this family. The shell is strong and slender, tapering gradually towards the apex. It has many coils, sometimes more than 20 stories. Species with smooth shell surfaces and beautiful patterns are used in shell crafts. It lives on sand or sandy mud bottoms in shallow tropical seas, and is carnivorous. The shell of the Terebra subulata (illustration) is 15 cm high and 25 cm in diameter, and is slender, with about 20 coils.
