1674-1761 (Enpo 2-Horeki 11) A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. His real surname was Magabuchi. He usually went by the surname Matsuki. He was from Osaka. His first pen name was Inkaku. In the winter of 1700 (Genroku 13), he moved to Edo, changed his pen name to Ihoku, and followed Fukaku and Kikaku. He claims to have met Basho in Edo and received the pen name of Rokoku, but this should not be believed. In 1704 (Hoei 1), he made a pilgrimage to Oshu in the footsteps of Basho, and compiled Adatarane. After Kikaku's death in 1707, he quietly changed his pen name, and moved to Kyoto the following autumn. At first, he had almost no haiku activities in Kyoto, and only enjoyed exchanging haiku with old friends when he went to Edo. However, after compiling "Juyukan" and "Rokugei" in 1715 (the 5th year of the Shōtoku era), he began to become actively involved in the Kyoto haiku world, and in 1716 (the 1st year of the Kyoho era), he established Hanjian on the slopes of Mount Juho, and published "Nihakunafuri" the following year.
