Nicolas Lemery

French pharmacist and chemist. Born in Rouen to a Protestant family, he began his apprenticeship as a pharmacist at his uncle's house. After six years of wandering and training, he went to Paris in 1672 to open a pharmacy and become successful in selling patent medicines. His private chemistry lectures became so popular that they were published in 1675 as Lectures on Chemistry, which went through many editions. These are thought to have been influenced by the ideas of R. Descartes, which were at the height of their popularity at the time, and explain the properties of chemical substances through mechanics (the shape and motion of particles).

フランスの薬学･化学者。ルーアンのプロテスタントの家に生まれ，おじの所で薬剤師見習として奉公を始めた。6年間の放浪と研修の後，1672年にパリに出て薬局を始め，特許の売薬で成功する。また彼の私的な化学講義は評判になり，75年に《化学講義》として出版され，多くの版を重ねた。これは当時隆盛を極めていたR.デカルトの思想の影響を受けたと思われ，化学物質の性質を機械論(粒子の形と運動)によって説明している。
