...These terraced fields for corn cultivation were extremely large in scale, and many of them were elaborately constructed using Inca stone masonry techniques. These terraced fields are called "andenes" in Spanish, and it is said that the word "Andes" is derived from this (Inca civilization). After the 16th century, crops and livestock from the Old World were introduced to the New World, causing major changes in various places, but corn is still cultivated and consumed in large quantities in Mesoamerica and the central Andes.
