International Geodynamics Project

GDP stands for Geodynamics Project. It was a long-term international research project on the Earth's interior carried out from 1973 to 1978, with the main theme of elucidating the movement in the Earth's mantle. Based on the results of the International Earth's Interior Exploration Program, the International Commission on Geodynamics (ICG) was established in 1970, mainly by the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the International Geological Union (IUGS). There are 44 participating countries, including Japan. Japan is responsible for three themes: elucidating the movement and structure of the mantle and crust beneath the Western Pacific Ocean, elucidating the movement and structure of island arcs, and physicochemical research of rocks and minerals originating from the Earth's interior as a fundamental study of mantle convection. GDP produced many results, and in the 1980s it developed into the next stage, the International Lithosphere Project.
