Byzantine monk and chronicler. Born into a Byzantine official's family, he entered a monastery after a short marriage and, for his opposition to the iconoclasm of Emperor Leon V, was canonized by the church as a "Homologētēs (Confessor of the Faith)." He inherited the unfinished chronicle of his friend George Synkerlos, which ran from the creation of the world to the year 284 under Emperor Diocletian, and wrote the Chronographia, a chronology of the Byzantine Empire up to 813, based on the creation of the world according to the Alexandrian calendar, between 811 and 814.

ビザンティン時代の修道士，年代記作者。ビザンティン帝国の高官の家に生まれ，短い結婚生活ののち修道院に入り，皇帝レオン5世のイコノクラスムに抗し，教会から〈信仰告白者Homologētēs〉として聖人に列せられた。友人ゲオルギオス･シュンケルロスの世界創造からディオクレティアヌス帝の284年に至る未完の年代記を継承，アレクサンドリア暦に基づく世界創造年代を軸とした813年までの編年体ビザンティン帝国史《年代記Chronographia》を，811‐814年に執筆。
