Pondicherry (English spelling)

Japanese: ポンディシェリー(英語表記)Pondicherry
Pondicherry (English spelling)
The administrative capital of the Union Territory of Pondicherry in southern India. It lies about 135 km south-southwest of Chennai (Madras) and faces the Bay of Bengal. Together with the surrounding areas, it forms the Pondicherry district of the Union Territory. It was occupied by France in 1674 and used as a base for the spice trade. It was subsequently repeatedly fought over by France, the Netherlands, and Britain, and fell into British hands several times. In 1816 it became a French territory, and the colonial office was established there. In 1954 it was returned to India along with other French territories. The port gradually fell into decline because large ships could not dock there, but it exported groundnuts and cotton products. It is a cultural center with many educational and research institutions and French-style buildings, including the medical, educational, and art colleges of the University of Madras. Population: 202,648 (1991).
