Imide

Japanese: イミド
Imide

A cyclic compound containing a -CONHCO- structure formed by the loss of two H 2 O from two carboxyl groups of a dicarboxylic acid and an ammonia molecule. Imides are synthesized by the reaction of dicarboxylic anhydrides with ammonia or by heating the ammonium salt of a dicarboxylic acid. Imides are weakly acidic, and the imide hydrogen can be replaced by a metal. Hydrolysis under alkaline conditions gives amidocarboxylic acids. Acyclic -CONHCO- structures are named as diacylamines.
