Ukie - Ukie

This is an ukiyo-e style that uses Western perspective painting techniques to emphasize the sense of perspective. It was also called "kubomi-e" (hollow painting) because the picture appears hollow. It mainly depicts the interior of theaters, rooms, or landscapes, and there are works of this style both as prints and original paintings. It is generally believed that this style was used in ukiyo-e from the end of the Kyoho era (1716-1736), but no works have been confirmed, and the oldest known confirmed example is a stage map published in the spring of 1744 (Enkyo 1). It is thought that it began to become common around the Enkyo era (1744-1748). It is said that Masanobu Okumura was the originator of this technique in ukiyo-e, and many of its surviving works remain, but there is noticeable inconsistency in the pictures because there was still an insufficient understanding of perspective painting. Later, Utagawa Toyoharu produced many more ukie prints, and the painting technique is considered to have been largely perfected.

西洋の遠近透視画法を用い、遠近感を強調して描かれた浮世絵のこと。画面がくぼんで見えることから、「くぼみ絵」ともよばれた。おもに劇場内部や室内、あるいは風景などが描かれ、版画、肉筆画ともに作品がある。享保(きょうほう)年間（1716～1736）末ごろから浮世絵に用いられたとする見解が定着しているが、作品は確認されておらず、最古の確実な作例とされるものに、1744年（延享1）春に版行された舞台図が知られている。一般化し始めたのは延享(えんきょう)年間（1744～1748）ごろと考えられる。なお、浮世絵にこの技法を取り入れた創始者は奥村政信(まさのぶ)といわれ、現存する作品も少なくはないが、まだ遠近画法の理解が不十分であったため画面の不統一が目だつ。のち歌川豊春(とよはる)によって、数多くの浮絵が発表され、画法もおよそ完成されたとみられている。
