A city in eastern Yamanashi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Its center is Yamura along the Katsura River, and it has long been a center of the Gunnai region, producing Kai silk. The silk weaving industry, which was a specialty of clothing linings and cushion fabrics, has declined in recent years, but metal products, general machinery, and electrical equipment industries are thriving. It is served by the Fujikyu Railway and the Chuo Expressway. It is home to the city-run Tsuru University. Area: 161.63 km2 .
