A visible binary star system, 84 astronomical units apart, the two red dwarfs have about half the mass of the Sun and orbit each other with a period of about 750 years. 61 Cygni has been attracting attention since 1792. G. Piacci of Italy found that its proper motion is 5.22 seconds per year. Because of this, FW Bessel assumed it was close by and in 1838 measured the trigonometric parallax to calculate the distance. Furthermore, the existence of an invisible third celestial body was discovered. The above binary stars are called 61 A and B, respectively, but C has only about eight times the mass of Jupiter and orbits A with a period of 4.8 years.

実視連星で，84天文単位離れて，太陽の半分程度の質量をもつ赤色矮星どうしが約750年周期で公転している。はくちょう座61番星は，1792年当時から注目されていた。イタリアのG.ピアッチは，その固有運動が1年間に5.22秒もあることをつきとめていた。このため，近距離にあると見たF.W.ベッセルは，1838年三角視差を測定し距離を算出した。さらに，不可視な第3番目の天体の存在がわかった。上記連星はそれぞれ61番A,Bと呼ばれるが，このCは木星の8倍くらいの質量しかなく，Aのまわりを4.8年周期で回っている。
