…Roman typefaces continued to be improved, and from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the foundations of modern Roman typefaces were laid by the excellent techniques of the Didot family of France and the Italian Caveliere Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813). Furthermore, from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, many designers, including the American Frederic William Goudy (1865-1947) and the British Eric Gill (1882-1940), created new types of typefaces. As such, although the typefaces of Western type appear to be extremely numerous and complex, typefaces of the same design are grouped into series according to the width and weight of the characters, and each series is collected to form a family. …
