A Man'yo poet. Date of birth and death unknown. Common name: Kasa no Ason Maro. During the Wadou period, he was praised for his achievements as the governor of Mino, and opened the Kiso road. During the Yoro period, he was in charge of the three provinces of Owari, Mikawa, and Shinano as an inspector (Azechi). He served as the right chief priest, and became a monk when the retired emperor Genmei fell ill. In 723 (Yoro 7), he served as the head priest of the Tsukushi Kanzeon-ji temple, and traveled westward. He had connections with the Dazai no Sochi Otomo no Tabito and others. He left seven tanka poems rich in humanity in the Man'yoshu. It was revealed after his death that he had fathered a child with a temple maid. "To what can we compare the world? 万葉歌人。生没年不詳。俗名笠朝臣麻呂。和銅年間美濃守として政績を賞せられ,また木曾道を開き,養老年間按察使(あぜち)として尾張・三河・信濃3国を管し,右大弁を経,元明上皇病臥に際して出家,723年(養老7)造筑紫観世音寺別当として西下,大宰帥大伴旅人らと交わり,人間味豊かな短歌7首を《万葉集》にとどめた。寺婢に子を生ませていたことが死後露顕。〈世の中を何に譬へむ朝開き漕ぎ去(い)にし船の跡無きごとし〉(巻三)。
