A type of cotton. It is world famous for its finest cotton, with fluff that is 4-6 cm long and has a delicate, beautiful luster. It is thought to have originated in Central and South America, but today it is grown on a very limited number of islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is particularly important in the lace industry, as it can be spun into fine threads of 100-200 count. However, certain weather conditions are required for cultivation, the yield is low, and it is vulnerable to insect damage, so it is only produced in limited areas.
