...On the other hand, in the 19th century, there were many examples of composers and performers working together to successfully harmonize sophisticated performance effects with the composer's pursuit of his own style. Ferdinand David (1810-1873) collaborated with Mendelssohn on his Violin Concerto, and Schumann, Bruch, Brahms, Dvorak and others wrote excellent concertos for J. Joachim. Violin pieces from the second half of the 19th century that attempted to combine high virtuosity with excellent musicality include E. Lalo's Concerto Español (1873), dedicated to the contemporary virtuoso P. de Sarasate, and Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3 (1880). Sonatas include Brahms' three sonatas (1879, 1886, 1888), C. Franck's masterpiece (1886) dedicated to the Belgian virtuoso E. A. Ysaye, and the Norwegian lyricist E. Grieg's No. 3 (1887). These pieces form important concert repertoire today. *Some of the terminology that mentions "David, F." is listed below. Source | Heibonsha World Encyclopedia 2nd Edition | Information |
