...Daifuku mochi is a flattened version of this. The Horeki Genraishu (1831) states that it is the successor to Otafuku mochi, which a widow in Koishikawa, Edo, began selling in the winter of 1771 (Meiwa 8). In any case, it became popular during the Kansei era (1789-1801), and every night in Edo, daifuku mochi sellers could be seen "placing a brazier inside a basket, putting a hot pot on it, and arranging mochi on it" (Kansei Kibun).
