Jinguji Temple

Japanese: 神宮寺 - じんぐうじ
Jinguji Temple
A temple built in the precincts of a shrine for Buddhist monks to serve the deities. The shrine's rituals were conducted in Buddhist style, such as by chanting sutras. It is also called Shingan-ji, Jingu-ji, Jingu-in, Betsu-do-ji, or Miya-dera. In the Nara period, shrine temples were built at Kashima, Tado, Futarasan, Atsuta, Kamo, Usa-Hachiman, and Ise-taisha, based on the idea that the deities also welcomed Buddhism. As the idea of syncretism between Shinto and Buddhism progressed and the theory of honji suijaku was established, shrine temples appeared one after another at shrines such as Keta, Iwashimizu, and Ishigami from the 9th century onwards, and eventually shrines in various provinces were established with shrine temples. They were abolished or separated due to the anti-Buddhist and anti-Shrine movement of the Meiji Restoration. Note that Kofuku-ji and Kasuga-sha, Enryaku-ji and Hiyoshi-sha, and Koyasan Kongobu-ji and Nyu-sha are different from shrine temples, as they enshrine local deities within the temple grounds to protect the temples. (→Shinbutsu Shugo, Shinbutsu Bunri-rei, Haibutsu Kishaku)
