A peddler who sells dokkeshi-uri (dokusho-maru). Also called "dokkeshi-uri." Dokusho-maru (dokusho-maru), a medicine for stomach problems (gastrointestinal disorders) and stomach aches, was sold in various places, including Kyoto, Satsuma (Kagoshima), and Higo (Kumamoto), but the term "dokusho-uri" generally refers to the peddler of dokkeshi-uri medicines in Echigo (Niigata). They were familiar to women who wore navy blue kasuri robes and leggings. Initially, it was a job for men, but with the start of the Meiji period, more women began to take up the role, and unmarried women would travel to remote areas for long periods of time, lasting more than six months, to peddle. Echigo's dokkeshi-maru was mainly produced in Maki-machi, Nishikanbara-gun, about 15km southwest of Niigata City. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
