… [Tsuneo Torii]
[Myths and legends]
The English word primrose is a corruption of primerole (the first flower to bloom), and the Japanese name also means a flower that blooms in early spring, and has no relation to roses or cherry blossoms. In Greek mythology, the young man Paralisos died of grief over the loss of his fiancée, and was transformed into a primrose. From this story, it has been used as a symbol of sadness and death in Western literature.
