...Steam turbines do not have much torque, but they can produce a lot of power by rotating at high speeds. This characteristic made them ideal as prime movers for driving generators, and their development coincided with the beginning of the use of electricity and the expansion of demand for it.
[Operating principle and format]
The basic components of a steam turbine are the nozzle, which expands the steam into a high-velocity stream, and the rotor blades, which do the work. This set is called a pressure stage, or simply a stage, and is essentially represented in Figure 1. Large turbines consist of many stages.
