Subalpine Zone - Akozantai

A vertical distribution zone, it refers to the area from just below the alpine zone to the forest limit, and corresponds to the subarctic zone. In Japan, the Pumila Zone corresponds to this. Humid mountainous areas are made up of dense shrub communities, with tree species varying by region, including birches, pines, rhododendrons, and azaleas. Dry mountainous areas are dotted with scattered clusters of junipers and barberries. There is also a view that the mountain coniferous forest zone (mountain coniferous forest zone), which includes trees such as silver fir and spruce, is considered to be the subalpine zone.

垂直分布帯の一つで、高山帯のすぐ下方から高木林限界までの間をさし、亜寒帯に相当する。日本ではハイマツ帯がこれにあたる。湿潤山地では密集した低木群落で構成され、その樹種はカンバ類、マツ類、シャクナゲ、ツツジ類など、地域によって異なる。乾燥山地ではビャクシン類、メギ類などの団塊状の群落が散在する。別にシラビソ、トウヒなどの山地針葉林帯（山地針葉樹林帯）を亜高山帯とする考え方もある。
